BLOG POST #3 – Thoughts + Tales: For the Love of Horror

Saturday 22nd October – Horror Convention

I can’t say I remember being a massive fan of horror movies. I could never get my head around:

1. Wanting to be scared half to death,

2. Watching the more disturbing side of a fellow humans imagination play out on a large screen,

3. Be surrounded by 100 strangers while I visibly jump out of my skin and scream audibly.

But, then I met Aaron.

Horror just happens to be his favourite genre. I wish I could say he broke me in gently, but in fact the first horror we watched together was Rob Zombies House of 1000 Corpses. click with caution! – You’ve been warned.

After many Saturday nights of watching various horrors I found that the supernatural had lingering effects. Alone in the flat and there’s a weird noise? I’m convinced I’ll need to call Edward and Lorraine Warren in to give the whole place a good exorcism, “givvus holy water by the gallon!”

In 2019 Aaron stumbled upon a convention called For The Love of Horror – a comic con for horror heads. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and rebooked for the next year but COVID hit so it was delayed. We ventured back this year hoping to see more movie stars, panel discussions, sets from iconic scenes, top class costumes from fans, with art and merch by the suitcase full, even tattoo artists – we weren’t disappointed!

We ventured to FTLOH as Michael Myers and Laurie Strode… and bumped into many other Michaels’ – see photo below.

I’m not saying I’m a horror convert.

I will still groan when Aaron wants to watch a horror on a Saturday night.

But, I definitely have an appreciation for the art form; and the horror following is generally full of very friendly and interesting folks.

BLOG POST #1 – HELLO

Saturday 8th October 2022 – on the M74 to Glasgow

So I’ve taken the plunge.. finally put pen to paper (or thumbs to screen) to share my thoughts on this wee section of the world I inhabit.

I’m Lauren. Born and raised in Northern Ireland and now living the creative life in Manchester. I made the leap across the water to study at the age of 18 and, like most other folks, never returned home after graduating. For me, the grass was a wee bit greener!

I set up camp in South Manchester and haven’t budged since. I spend most of my days lecturing students in Theatre or working at Reform Radio station. Evenings are spent baking, eating, playing hockey and gaming.

So that’s enough about me for now. I’ve just reached Glasgow – glad I brought my big coat!
